If you've got your Bible, turn with me, if you would, to 1 Kings chapter 1. 1 Kings chapter 1 as we continue our study of the life of this Old Testament character King Solomon We're looking at his success We're going to look at his setbacks We're going to look at his sin And we're going to look at His sadness as we begin to understand this man's life as it unfolds before us We began last week by looking at the birth of Solomon And we're going to jump ahead 20 years to look at the coronation of Solomon as king over Israel at about 20 years of age
And he will reign, as the Bible says, for 40 years Now, I want you to think about something with me for a moment If you're 20 years of age, which most of you are not, of course, but if you were 20 years of age, I'm sure you could look back at your life and Begin to reflect on all the things that took place in your family Let's say you're 20 and you're halfway through college and you're looking back at your life and Thinking back about what your dad did, what your mom did, how they impacted your life or didn't impact your life
You're able to go back and see many different things and how the events in your life began to shape and form How you were on this day We can look back and understand those things and think about young Solomon's life And how it began with his parents and their sin, and the confession of that sin, and David going into Bathsheba, laying with her, and she conceiving After the death of their son that was conceived in immorality, and Stalin was born, his name is the Man of Peace Named that way because David now was at peace with God He had been reconciled to God He was at peace with God
He was at peace with Bathsheba And therefore, they named their son Solomon Nathan the prophet came and he said, No, you'll name him Jedediah, which means bel of the Lord, because the Lord loved Solomon And this boy was raised in the palace there in the city of David. I've had the opportunity to stand on the excavations of that Great palace in Israel If you go with me in the new year, you'll stand on the city of David You'll stand on the palace of King David And you wonder what went through the mind of Solomon having been raised in that palace with that family
When you think about all the events that took place, and the Bible doesn't record everything that happens, we know that Am The firstborn of David rebelled against his authority, raped his half-sister Tamar We know that Absalom, which was the thirdborn of David, was so angry with Amnon and angry with his father that he did nothing, that he ended up killing Amnon He would flee from Jerusalem, be gone a few years, come back and seek to overthrow his father And yet, God prevailed And David would even have to flee Jerusalem
And in his fleeing of Jerusalem, you wonder if Solomon was left behind, or did Solomon go with him? Do we know? We don't And then David comes back because Absalom's killed by David's general Joab, and all the repercussions of that within the family And then you begin to think about how even David would begin to number his soldiers when he was told not to, and the great pestilence that came upon Jerusalem and thousands were killed So many events that took place in Solomon's life to shape him and to mold him into the kind of individual he was
The things that we do, that our parents do, and the events that take place around us begin to shape and mold the way we think And you begin to wonder as you read through the book of Proverbs how much of what took place in Solomon's life growing up shaped the way The word of God was written in the book of Proverbs For instance, in the book of Proverbs, Solomon says this
In verse 8 of chapter 1, hear, my son, your f's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching. I wonder when he wrote that under the inspiration of the scripture, was he thinking about his father's teaching and Bathsheba's instruction? He would go on to say that indeed they are graceful wreaths to your head and ornaments about your neck Evidently, he had heard from his father and from his mother The teaching of truth
If you go over to chapter 2, it begins in verse number 1, My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding You cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding, seek her as silver, search for her as for hidden treasures, you will discern the fear of the Lord Discover The knowledge of God, for the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding
And you wonder how much of that did he hear from his father and from his mother? For in verse 11 he says, Discretion will guard you and understanding will watch over you Chapter 3, verse number 1: My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments For length of days and years of life, and peace they will add to you And then, over in chapter 4, verse number 1: Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father and give attention that you may gain understand For I give you sound teaching Do not abandon my instruction
When I was a son to my father, now you begin to hear a little bit of what took place when he was growing up there in the palace in Jerusalem When I was a son to my father, tender and the only son in the sight of my mother, who's that? That's Bathsheba Then he taught me and said to me, Let your heart hold fast my words, keep my commandments, and live You wonder in verse 20, my son, give attention to my words, inc your ear to my sayings, do not let them depart from your sight, keep them in the midst of your heart, for they are life to those who find them in health to all their body
Then he says those famous words: Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life How much of the book of Proverbs, the book of wisdom, did Solomon write that would cause him to reflect back on his early childhood? In those first 20 years, and what took place in that palace Oh, if the rocks could speak and talk to us about the conversations in the palace The first six sons that David had all c from different women That has to promote much dysfunction in the family We talk about Solomon being raised in royalty, which he was Prosperity, which he was
Popularity as the king's son Nob in the lineage of David But there was much dysfunctionality in that family So much dysfunction that Reigns supreme throughout the scripture You wonder how Solomon was ever to begin as king and lead the nation into peace For 40 years, knowing how he was raised and all that took place in his family and how it affected him It did affect him And unfortunately, it would affect him in a negative way later on in life when he would have many wives and many concubines He would multiply Many times over what his father did
What your children or what you do as parents in moderation, your children do in what? Ah, see, you were here last week Excess They do They multiply it over and over again And so we begin this life of Solomon, this reign of Solomon, amidst a crisis It begins in the midst of a crisis The king, David, is about to die Commentat tell us that he's around 70 years of age That 's nine years older than me Okay? So picture me nine years older, if you possibly can do that Was about the age of David When he was up in years and about to die
Next week, we'll look at David's last words to his son and what he has to say to him That would hopefully impact the future legacy and dynasty of his kingship But at this time, he is about About dying He's getting old So, this is how the text begins in 1 Kings chapter 1. I'm going to take you through the text, read it through with you, and as we go through it, just stop, make comments About what is happening so that you understand Solomon's coronation, how Solomon becomes king over Israel Now, King David was old If you think seven is old, well, I guess the scripture says it is, so it is
Now, King David was old, advanced in age, and they covered him with clothes But he could not keep warm So his servant said to him, Let them seek a young virgin for my lord the king Let her attend to the king and become his nurse And let her lie in your bosom, that my Lord the King may keep warm So he search a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel. and found Abish the Shunnam and brought her to the king And the girl was very beautiful She became the king's nurse and served him, but the king did not cohabitate with her Or co with her
Now, I know you're thinking, what on earth is going on? Why would they even do this? Well, Josephus tells us, who was a first century historian, that this was a very comm practice, a very customary medical way to deal with circulatory problems And this is how they handle it They would have this person come in and lie with the person who was unable to keep warm to keep them warm at night And David did not do anything immoral with her at all Texas tells us that So it begins by letting us know that David is up in years David is going to die The end is near
He's having struggles, which presents a crisis in the kingdom So, the first point that we cover is the crisis before the coronation Because what's going to happen now? One thing you're going to notice about King David is that King David was very delinquent in a lot of his duties He was delinquent, as we saw last week in 2 Samuel 11, in his responsibility and his duty as a soldier, as a warrior, to go to war, right? And the delinquency of his responsibility led to his iniquity It always does
David was delinquent in his responsibility as king to make sure that Solomon was in line and everybody knew for sure that he was the successor to the throne Didn do that So, David's fourth son, Adon Believes that it's his time to take the throne Amnon's dead The second son, Kile, he probably died early on in age because we don't know anything about him in scripture Absalom was third, Adon was the fourth son So the fourth son Believes that he deserves to be the king So he's going to take advantage of the situation He's going to take advantage of the crisis in the kingdom
To make himself k over Israel So the Bible says this in verse number f: Now Adonij, the son of Hag Exalted himself, saying, I will be king Notice the phrase: he exalted him He raised himself up, saying, I will be king Didn't the Bible say, Let another man praise you and not your own lips? Oh, by the way, Solomon would write that in the book of Proverbs Also, Solomon would write Chapter 29, verse number 23: A man's pr will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor. I wonder when he wrote those words if he thought of Adanijah his brother
The Bible also says in the book of Proverbs, the 13th chapter, the 10th verse, these words Through pride comes nothing but strife Think about that Through pride comes nothing but strife Do you have strife in your family? Ask yourself who is trying to exalt themselves And Enij said, I will exalt myself. I will be the king Now we know, and we'll know from next week's lesson, well, not next week, the week after that, excuse me, chapter 2 That Adon knew that Solomon was the successor to the throne But he wasn 't about to give it over Now, think about it this way
If David had six, his first six sons from six different w, how do you think it went in that home with those women who wanted their son? To be the next king. I'm sure there was much strife that took place in those homes, much anger, much strife, much difficulty We don't know all that took place in all the conversations, but we do know that Ad Nij wanted to exalt himself, and he himself wanted to be king Over Israel So, what did he do? Well, the text tells us It says, So he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen with 50 men to run before him
If you go back to 2 Samuel, you realize that's the exact same thing that Absalom did It was an evidence of p It was evidence or display of the opportunity to demonstrate how great you are And Adon would be into the appearance So he wanted to appear strong He wanted to appear secure He wanted to make an appearance before the people that he should be the king But what he does is truly a violation of what the king was supposed to do And these verses are going to come up on many occasions throughout our study of Solomon
Because way back in the book of Deuteronomy, God told Moses to write these words in Deuteronomy chapter 17, verse number 14 He said, When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, I will set a king over me like the nations who are around me, you shall surely set a king over you Whom the Lord your God chooses One from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves You may not put a foreigner over yourselves Who is not your countryman Moreover, he shall not multiply hors for him
Sh I do that? One of the journeys in Israel is to the Tell of Megidd And on top of Megid, you're able to see the stables of Solomon. and the horses that he would number there in that part of the country for him. A violation of what the scripture says the king was not supposed to do You read on, it says, He shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses Since the Lord has said to you, You shall never again return that way He shall not multiply wives for him
Or else his heart will turn away, nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself Sol would do all three of those things All three of them, and more But the important thing to note is that Horses were a symbol of power, right? And the Bible says in Psalm 20, verse number 7, that some trust in chariots and some trust in horses But we trust in the name of the Lord our God They shall be brought down and fall, but we shall rise up and stand firm God did not want his people trusting in what they could see He wanted his people trusting in him wholeheartedly
If the king did not do that, If the king did not pave the way for that, it would cause the people to distrust the Lord But Ab, like Absalom, Would go about showing his power with his horses, his chariots, his footmen, to prove that he deserved to be king Now, notice this It says in 1 Kings chapter 1, verse number 6: his father Had never crossed him at any time by asking, Why have you done so? His father never crossed him, never questioned him, never held him accountable It says, His father never crossed him at any time
Meaning that throughout his whole life, his father Was delinquent in his responsibility of confronting and dealing with his son's disobedience If you're a parent here this evening, you need to take supreme note of what the Bible says David, as we said last week, was a horrible father Great king, horrible father And one of the ways he demonstrated why he was such a horrible father is that he did not discipline his children He was delinquent in his duty with Amnon when he raped his half-sister He was delinquent in his duty with Absalom when he rebelled against his authority
And now he's delinquent in his responsibility with Adnijah. I always find it perplexing Let's think about it this way When your children are growing up and you see that their teeth are crooked, what do you do? You fix them You put braces on their teeth because you're concerned about their physical appearance And I'm sure that there are a lot of you in here tonight whose parents gave you braces or you were in the process of giving your children braces So that when they smile, they don't have one tooth pointing north and the other pointing south
Did you ever hear that song? Oh, Hag, Mag, Hug Walk, Hog, Log, Gog was her name? She had two teeth in her mouth, one pointed north and the other pointed south You guys never heard that song? Wow She had two eyes in her head One was yellow, the other red Your mom never sang that song to you? My mom sang that song to me all the time You know? So they put braces on my teeth to make sure they were straight, not crooked But when our children are crooked, what do we do? Think about it
We can become so enamored with the physical appearance of our children that we forget about the spiritual condition of their heart And don't spend time investing into what really matters So I got news for you When you get old, your teeth are falling out Whether they point north or south or absolutely straight, they're coming out That's just the way it is And they're going to get old and grungy They just are So the heart's condition is absolutely essential
And yet we will do everything we can to fix that which is broken in our child: a broken arm, a broken tooth, whatever physically is wrong with them We want to do all we can to make sure that Physically, they appear right because we don't want them to have a quote low self-esteem But what do we do about their God-est? That they will esteem God over everything to make sure they know the word of the Lord. I'm sure David provided for his family. I'm sure he gave them everything they needed He was the king He could give them chariots He could give them gold He could give them robes He can give them
Nike sandals You know, he could give them whatever they wanted But what did he do about their heart's condition? When he didn't even begin to correct them when they were wrong What do we talk about a couple of weeks ago, 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17? God's word, the inspired word of God, is given, it's profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for Correction, taking that which is crooked and making it straight
Why can't we take the Word of God and invest it into the lives of our children so that their crooked hearts become straight, their lives become straight? When I read this and thought to myself, David did nothing You've got to be kidding me He's a man after God's own heart He's a sweet singer, the psalmist of Israel He was God's warrior, but so delinquent in his responsibility with his children And look how it affected his family How about you? As a parent, this should be a wake-up call to every one of us to realize the enormous responsibility that we have
To make sure that we discipline our children at a very young, very early age So they grow up in a home where discipline mark the distinctiveness of their homes So they know about the discipline of the Lord David did nothing So the text says, and he was a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom And he had conferred with Joab, the son of Zerui, and with Abiath, the priest, following Adon They helped him Now, Abi, it's a better pronunciation of his name, was not in favor with David anymore And neither was Zeruai He wasn't either They had fallen out of disfavor with the Lord
And so, what they did, or it's not Joab I'm sorry, Joab, they had fallen out of disfavor with the Lord They now are going to side with Ad Because now they can have their prominent place in the king's palace, which they had lost under the reign of David So they have a selfish interest as much as Adon does But Zad the priest, Bania the son of Yehoid, Nathan the prophet, Shem, Reh, and the mighty men who belonged to David were not with Adoni Verse 9 and then Ni sacrificed sheep and oxen and the fatl by the stone of Zo, or better translation, the serpent's stone. or the st of the creeping one
Now, why would he do that? This was a Jebus location where they worshipped snakes And this is where he would offer up his sacrifices Why? Because there would be a veneer of religion in him making himself king But it wasn't true He wanted to show himself religious to the people of Israel so they would accept him as king And it says This place, the St of Zoleth, which is beside En Roge Why En Roge? Because En was on the border of the tribe of Benjamin And the first king of Israel was Saul, who was from the tribe of Benjamin
And he was going to win those people over to himself by declaring himself as k So let me show you En. I have a picture on a map here I can show you if you could pull it up for me, please So I'm going to show you just a couple of things to put it into perspective for you, okay? Now, if you can't see this, either you're too far away or you're getting really, really old Okay? En is right here The Gah Spring is right here The Gohon Spring is where Nath is going to anoint Solomon as king of Israel That's how you know they're going to be able to hear in En what's happening
Because there is a valley here Called the Kid Valley If you go with me to Israel, we will show you where this place is In fact, we'll take you to the exact location where Nathan anointed Solomon king over Israel And you'll be able to see that this place here is at the base of where the Hinnom Valley, okay, connects to the Kidj Valley Now, why is that important? Let me show you the next slide, if you would, please There you go Now, maybe you can't see this as well as I could see it when I was up close But you'll see that there is the Hinn Valley
You have the Kid Valley and you have the Central Valley or what's called the Tyro Valley Why is that important? Because if you look, take an aerial view of it, you understand that these three valleys that are right here all form what is called the Hebrew letter Shin If you want to know what that looks like, it looks like that Or you can go to Psalm 119, 161, because the first letter of every verse begins with the Hebrew letter Shin That Shin represents Shadd, the mighty one of Israel
And so when you read this verse in the book of Isaiah, the eighth chapter, when it says, The Lord of hosts dwells on Mount Zion This is a little bit of a side note, but this is All of Mount Zion Okay, Mount Zion is separated by two major valleys and has one valley in it Okay, all of this is Mount Zion, the city of the great king The Mount of Olives is over here And so you begin to understand the significance of that So when David talks about how Jerusalem is surrounded by the hills In the safety of it, the stronghold of it, you can see that when you stand on Mount Zion in the city of David
But if you read on in Isaiah, Isaiah chapter 18 This is what the Lord God says It says, The place of the name of the Lord of hosts is Mount Zion So you have Mount Zion, which is the place of the name What's the name? The name of God What's the name of God? Shadda, the Mighty One When he says that my name is on Mount Zion, he literally has put his name on the mount through the valleys that surround it To prove, to show that his name, Shaddai, is actually on the mountain itself Very important to realize that
So, go back to the previous slide, would you please, Stone? And I want to show you again, so you understand the close proximity This is less than a mile away Okay, it's less than a mile And this is where Ad goes and Mog, a spring that's right on the border of Benjamin The tribe of Benjamin, to get those people who were loyal to Saul to be loyal to him There he would offer up sacrifices But David from his palace will have his son or have Nathan take his son down to the Gah Spring To anoint him there as king over Israel
So, when all the people shout and give praise to God, in this valley, which is a natural amphitheater, They're going to hear all that's happening here and going to cause great fear to all those who gather there You with me so far? Good, so the lights can go up If we have it etched in the memory of our brain, we'll never forget it So this is where Adnijah takes his people, offers up sacrifices And if you read on, it says That he invited all the brothers and the king's sons and all the men of Judah, the king's servants But he did not invite Nathan the prophet
Ban, the mighty men, and Solomon his brother That 's how you know that Adanijah knew that Solomon was to be the next king He didn't invite the prophet Nathan because to be the king, you had to be anointed by the prophet and the priest And there is a priest and there is a prophet When Samuel anointed David king over Israel and Saul king over Israel, he was both prophet and priest And so, to be anointed king over Israel, there had to be a prophet and a priest present He did not invite them because he was going to exalt himself as king over Israel, so all the people would follow him
So, that's the crisis before the coronation David is about to die David did nothing to ensure that Solomon would be the rightful heir To the throne, so the people would know So his fourthborn son Adnij now decides to take things and matters into his own hand and run the show And he did this simply because David was delinquent in his duty, his responsibility as king, to make sure that his son was disciplined on a regular basis His son belie There would be no consequence for his disobedience because there was no consequence for Ammon and there was no consequence for Absalom
Make sense? That's what I told you last week Your children are watching how you discipline the other children Because as they watch and observe, that will allow them to push the borders further or bring the borders closer Because they know how you're going to respond to sin and disobedience Ad Nij had no fear of that So he rebelled against his father, took matters into his own hands, wanted to be king over Is So you move to verse 11, and this is the confirmation, the confirmation For the coronation
Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon, saying, Have you not heard that Ad, the son of Hag, Has become king, and David our Lord does not know it So now come, please, let me give you counsel and save your life and the life of your son Solomon Why would the life be spared? Simply because if you are a threat to the king in any way, then your life is taken from you Well, Nathan knows that So listen, if Ad becomes king, you guys are gon So David doesn't know this
So go at once to the King David, and say to him, Have you not, my lord, O king, sworn to your maidservant, saying, Surely Solomon, your son, shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne? Why then is Ad become king? Behold, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words So, this just isn't a wife talking to her husband Nathan, the prophet, will come in and confirm that what the wife is saying is absolutely correct So Bathsheba went into the king in the bedroom Now the king was very old, and Abish the Shud was ministering to the king
Then Bathsheba bowed and prostrated herself before the king, and the king said, What do you wish? She said to him, My lord, you swore to your maid by the Lord your God, saying, Surely your son Solomon shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne Now behold, Adnij is king, and now my lord, the king, you do not know it He has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king of Abiath. the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant
As for you now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you. to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my Lord the King after him What a great statement Oh, my king, the eyes of all Israel are on you What a great statement Saying to your husband, everybody's watching what you're going to do The decision you make now The response that you have at this time is going to confirm your legacy in the eyes of the nation Talk about accountability Talk about responsibility She does it in such a wise way, oh King The eyes of the nation are looking to you to show that you have the authority
You're the king You have to act You can no longer be delinquent in your responsibility You have to demonstrate leadership You are the king to show the nation who the king is going to be after you He says in verse 21, Otherwise, it will come about as soon as my lord the king sleeps and his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered offenders And behold, while she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in They told the king, saying, Here is Nathan the prophet And when he came in before the king, he prostrated himself before the king and his face to the ground
Then Nathan said, My lord the king, have you said, Ad shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne? Have you said that? Have you told Adon that he is now king of Israel? For he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fat and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king's sons and the commanders of the army here And Abi the priest, and behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and they say, Long live King Adon But me, even me, your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Bania the son of Yehodah, and your servant Solomon He isn invited
Has this thing been done by my Lord the King, and you have not shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my Lord the King after him? Is this really what's taking place? Is this the way you want it to happen? So, Nathan does exactly what he said was going do He's going to come in and confirm the words of Bathsheba so the king knows That this is absolute truth This has taken place This is not the mother of a son pleading for her son to be king over Israel Because we know, we know that God told David who would be king of Israel
Although the text here doesn't tell us, the text in 1 Chronicles chapter 22 does tell us Listen to what it says Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build the house for the Lord God of Israel And David said to Solomon, My son, I had intended to build the house To the name of the Lord my God But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, You have shed much blood, excuse me, and have waged great wars You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed so much blood on the earth before me
Behold, a son will be born to you, who shall be a man of rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side, for his name shall be Solomon And I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days He shall build a house for my name He shall be my son And I will be his father, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever Why is that important? Because when Bathsheba comes in and says to David, Did you not promise that my son Solomon will be king over Israel? She's not saying that because of her own emotions She's not saying that because of her own benefit
She's saying that because the Lord God of Israel told David that his son Solomon would be the next king over Israel She wants her husband To obey the word of the Lord What a great testimony for every wife to hear She wants her husband to be obedient to the word of the Lord She doesn't want him to defy God's word She wants him to follow what God has already stated And proclaimed and made very clear to David And David made very clear to her, Bathsheba And now that all that is threatened, she goes to her husband And she goes to him on behalf of the authority of the Word of God
She goes to him on behalf of the truth of God and its expense She goes to him based on the fact that she wants her husband in the eyes of all Israel To obey what God has said and let them know it That's what every wife should want from her husband Every wife should plead with her husband based on what God has already said Every woman should plead with her husband based on the truth of the wor. of the Lord And that's exactly what Bathsheba does with David as the confirmation for the coronation now comes so that everybody knows that this is exactly what is to take place
And so it says in verse number 28: Then King David said, Call Bathsheba to me She came into the king's presence and stood before the king And the king vowed and said, As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress Surely, as I vowed it, or vowed to you by the Lord, the God of Israel, saying, Your son Solomon shall be king after me And he shall sit on my throne in my place. I will indeed do this today. I will do this Oh, the old king, the old lion, ris and begins to roar He 's going to be strong one last time He's going to uphold the word of the Lord so that all will know
Then it says these words, I love this Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground and prostrated herself before the king and said, May my Lord King David live Forever What great respect Listen, ladies, listen, fellas, men, husbands Wh you do what God's word says, you get immediate respect from your wife Immediate respect Your wife wants you to lead spiritually She wants you to obey the word of the Lord When you do, when you stand strong, when you vow to obey God's word without compromise
Immed, with great respect, she bows before the king, not for any other reason other than the fact that she totally respects her husband, the king. I think every man in the room would want his wife to respect his decision-making process, would want his wife To willingly submit to his leadership You obey the word of the Lord You follow through with what God says You get a Bathsheba kind of response Bathsheba knew what God's word said She wanted her husband to follow what God's word said So she pled with him based on not her emotions
Based on not her feelings, based on not what she wanted, but based totally upon what God has already said to her husband David about what's to happen next She knows that So she goes to him and pleads to him on that, on on that be on behalf of God's word and its authority And David responds And she respects him greatly Not because her son's going to be king, but because her son is going to honor the word, her husband is going to honor the word of the Lord So there you get the confirmation before the coronation Now comes the command for the coronation
Then King David said, Call to me Zad the priest, Nathan the prophet, Ban the son of Jehoid And they came to the king's presence And the king said to them, Take with you the servants of your Lord And have my son Solomon ride on my own what? Mule My mule Why? Because that's the way it was supposed to be Remember, when Christ came into Jerusalem He came on the backside of a donkey, right? When he comes again, he's going to come on a white horse But when he came the first time, he came as a mark of humiliation because the king's mark of quality Was the mark of humility
He would ride on the backside of the mule, the king's mule If're riding the king's mule, you had to have permission from the king to ride it You just can't say, I'm going to take that one over there. I'll ride that one. I know it's the king's, but you won't care No, no, no You don't ride the king's mule unless you have permission to ride the king's mule So you take him and bring him down to Gohon You saw the map You know where Gah is? It 's the spring It 's the water that feeds the city of Jerusalem, the old city, so that the palace would have the water it needed
Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there as king over Israel and blow the trumpet and say, Long live King Solomon! Then you shall come up after him He shall come up, come, and sit on my throne, and be king in my place For I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah Wow Very important Remember when David became king? He became king over Judah first, right? King over Judah for seven years And then he became king over all of Israel Very important So David says, over Israel and over Judah Because these are two major geographical areas later in the life of Solomon
These two areas will be divided again But right now he's showing the unity that they have and how Solomon will maintain peace in the unity between Israel and Judah But in the end, there's a divided kingdom Judah divides from Israel And they won't be united again until King Jesus comes again So Solomon becomes that type of Christ Riding the mule to the praises of the people, where great joy will come as they say, Long live the king! As Christ was riding into Jerusalem, and people saying, Hose To the son of David, Hosanna, to the king of Israel But yet they would reject that king
But he will come again one day So Solomon becomes that type of Christ before the nation as a man of peace. B'n the son of Yehoid answered the king and said, Amen Thus may the LORD the God of my Lord the king say, As the LORD has been with my LORD the king, so may he be with Solom, and make his throne greater than the throne Of my Lord King David Wow, what a statement May he make his throne greater than your throne, my king May God do something unique
So you move from the crisis before the coronation to the confirmation of the coronation to the command for the coronation to the celebration after the coronation Verse 38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Bania the son of Yehoid, and the Kerathites and the Pele Why are they important? Because that's the bodyguard The bodyguards of David, the secret service people of David, went down and had Solomon a ride on the King David's mule and brought him to Gah. S the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon
Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, Long live King Solomon All the people went up after him, and the people were playing on flutes and rejoicing with what? Great joy Great joy Same thing that happened when the Messiah was born There was great joy Because there was peace in the land So much noise that the earth shook the Texas Now remember on the map, you're less than a mile away Both are in the valley of the Kid, so it provides a natural amphitheater where all the noise would just go up and down that valley arena So now you have the consternation after the confirmation
It says this: Now Adon and all his guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Why is the city making such an uproar? While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan, the son of Abiathar, the priest, came Then Adon said, Come in, for you are a valiant man and bring good news But Jonathan replied to Adon, No, our Lord King David has made Solomon king The king has also sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet Remember, I told you, you had to be anointed by both prophet and priest? Well, there they are
Ben the son of Yehoid, the Kerath and the Pele, and they have made him ride on the king's mule Zad the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gah, and they have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar This is a noise which you have heard Besides, Solomon has even taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom In other words, he has become a co-regent with his father, the king of Israel Moreover, the king's servants came to bless our Lord King David, saying, May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and his throne greater than your throne
And the king bowed himself on the bed The king also has also said, Thus, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has granted one to sit on my throne today while my own eyes see it Then all the guests of Adnijah were terrified, and they arose and each went on his way Why would they terrify if they truly believed that Ad-Nij was to be the king? And they didn't look out for their own interests, but for the interest of the Lord God of Israel, they would not have been terrified But when each person has their own interest at stake, okay, Joab had his own interest, okay, he was about himself
There is no commitment to one another There's only commitment to me People filled with pride and self-interest are only committed to one thing: themselves And so when everything begins to unravel before them, they become afraid and they leave The Bible says N was afraid of Solomon, and he arose, went and took hold of the horns of the altar, the brazen altar The place of mercy Now it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonij is afraid of King Solomon, for behold, he has taken hold of the horns of the altar
Saying, let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword He went to beg for mercy He went to a place, the only place he could go, the brazen altar Grab a hold of the horns on that altar where blood was spilled on behalf of people's sins and beg for mercy Solomon said, If he is a worthy man, not one of his hairs will fall to the ground, but if wickedness is found in him, he will die So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar, and he came and prostrated himself before King Solomon And Solomon said to him, Go to your house
Solomon is the king of Israel Solom is now in charge And that Nijah comes and bows prostrate before his brother, begging for mercy And Solomon simply says, go to your house Could Solomon have killed him? Yes Would he be in the right to do so? Yes But Solomon was a man of peace He was a peacemaker What did Christ say? Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God He was demonstrating the mercy of Christ He was demonstrating the grace of God to his brother Ad That's Solomon, the man of peace That's how he begins his reign as the man beloved of the Lord
He begins his reign amidst the crisis Where his own half-brother tries to take the throne from him But being raised by David and Bathsheba, Solomon knew he was al to be king He had been taught the prophecy given to him by the Lord, the covenant of David He knew that He would rest in that And had no worry about Ab because he knew that God had truly appointed him king over Israel So thus begins the reign of King Solomon as he begins to put forth his duties as the man of peace Let's pray together Father, we thank you, Lord, for our time together this evening We thank you for the word of the Lord
So much to cover, so little time to do it, so many things to be reminded of Our prayer is that, Lord, we would be men and women who truly learn from David and Bathsheba in this context Of a woman who would go and plead with her husband based on the authority of God's word. A husband who would submit to the authority of God's word and gain the respect of his beloved wife And pray, Father, that as we continue to learn lessons from the life of Solomon, that we will grow deep in our walk with Christ We pray in Jesus' name Amen Thank you so much for coming
Don't forget, turn your clocks ahead so you're not late for church on Sunday You're dismissed.
