As you were here on Wednesday night, I was told by my doctor that he stay off my knee as much as possible So I'm going to try to do that for you But it's very difficult for me to stay seated while I preach Because I get so excited about what I have to say and what God has been teaching me And so it's hard for me to to to be subdued. I was reading about a guy this past week It was a preacher. He said listen if if you're not excited on Saturday about what you're preaching on Sunday You better get another job Okay, and I'm excited every Saturday night about what's gonna happen on the next day as we Begin to share with you some of the things that the Lord has been been teaching me and weren't Hebrews 1 1 & 2 and we've camped out there for a while and we're gonna be there for just at least a few more Weeks because it's so important to understand the sufficiency and supremacy of Christ his word For God has spoken to us through a son in the last of these days and the sufficiency of God's Word is so important It's enough.
We don't need anything else other than the Word of God and yet so many times we think we need more There's a perfect illustration of that In Luke chapter 19. So if you got your Bible turn with me to Luke chapter 19 Now if you've been with us over the last 10 years, you know that we spent nine of those years in Luke's gospel Going through each and every aspect of our Lord's life as Luke had given it to us And so in Luke 19, you have what is commonly called the triumphal entry into?
Jerusalem and most people will believe that it's on this day Palm Sunday that Jesus came into Jerusalem But if you were with us in a study of Luke, you know, there's no such thing as Palm Sunday in all reality It's called Palm Monday, it's Monday that Christ came into Jerusalem not Sunday. You say well, how do you know that? Well, we know that because of John's gospel the 12th chapter. We know that on Saturday He was in Bethany and we know that on Saturday night Judas would leave go to Jerusalem according to Matthew's gospel Tell the chief priests betray the Lord Jesus and they would come because they were coming to see not only Jesus but to kill Lazarus on the next day, which would be Sunday and Then on the very next day according to John's gospel.
He went into Jerusalem and so you need to understand all the Gospels to understand the scenario that it was really Palm Monday not Palm Sunday But because so many churches celebrated on this day. I thought it'd be a fitting Illustration to show you how the people in Jerusalem the message for them was not enough There was something more that Jesus had to do so, you know that he wrote into Jerusalem on the backside of a donkey and the Bible says in Luke 19 verse number 36 Or 35 these words they brought it to Jesus and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it And as he was going they were spreading their coats on The road very important now remember there are millions of Jews two million of them in Passover in Jerusalem at this time I'm not sure all two million were there but as you recall the story there were just two weeks before this a healing of two blind men 17 miles away in Jericho Well, the people were already making their way to Jerusalem for Passover at that time And so the healing of the two blind men in Jericho would only cause there to be more enthusiasm around Jesus He was on his way to Bethany.
He'd be on his way to to raise Lazarus from the dead which would increase the crowds all the more Because this miracle worker was doing so many marvelous things So now as he begins to embark on Jerusalem the people Who were worshiping him were spreading their garments before them now that was taken from 2nd Kings chapter 9 Because that would be symbolic of their submission To this one they would call the king Okay, and then read this it says in verse number 37 as soon as he was approaching near the descent of the Mount of Olives The whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen Remember, they praised him for the miracles not for the message They didn't like the message.
They loved the miracles. Why? Because the miracles pertained to the physical element of their lives The message pertained to the spiritual element of their lives They didn't care about the spiritual. All they cared about was the physical And so they praised him for the miracles that he had done They were willing to submit to him as long as he supplied all of their physical needs But because he was their Messiah and he came to save them from their sin and that was the message They didn't like that.
He could be their Messiah if he continued to meet their physical needs and did not give them the message of repentance and Coming to him by faith so the Bible says verse 38 shouting Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord peace in heaven and glory in the highest Okay.
So now they are quoting Psalm 118 verse number 26, which is a messianic song. Okay So isn't it interesting that they would know certain aspects of the Old Testament But not all aspects of the Old Testament Because Zechariah chapter 9 verse number 9 prophesied this Rejoice greatly o daughter of Zion shout and triumph o daughter of Jerusalem. That's exactly what they did Behold your king is coming to you. He is just and endowed with salvation humble and mounted on a donkey Even on a colt the full of a donkey So now they are fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9 9 and they don't even know that Yet they could quote Psalm 118 verse number 26 as it pertains to Messiah Their king for the king was called according to Psalm 118 the coming one That's why they said blessed is he who is the coming one who comes in the name of?
the Lord and yet the only Wanted something more than the message The message was not enough the miracles They would be enough but the message It didn't meet what they wanted So Christ tells them very clearly as According to other aspects of the Gospels. He wept over the city verse 41. I Love going to this place in Israel because it reminds me of this portion of Scripture Exactly the compassion of our Lord for his people. You know, what does he say to them if you had known in this day? Even you in other words, you should have known about this day.
Why should they have known about this day? the prophecy of Daniel 9 27 because in Daniel 9 Daniel gave the prophecy about the coming of the Messiah That would be fulfilled in 173 thousand eight hundred and eighty days from the day that King Artaxerxes gave the decree for the Jews to go back to Jerusalem and to rebuild the temple March 14th for 45 BC and 173 thousand eight hundred and eighty days later the Messiah would arrive in Jerusalem And that's exactly what he did. It is the most precise Prophecy given in Scripture when it comes to time of day He did So he says if you'd only known on this day you should have known but you see Scripture wasn't sufficient The message wasn't sufficient It was the miracles.
It was something more That they wanted And that's why he says down to verse 44. He says you did not recognize the time of your Visitation the day in which the Messiah would come to visit you to bless you. You should have known But you didn't oh, you know Psalm 118 26 But you didn't know Zechariah 9 9 You didn't know Daniel 9 27 You should have known But they didn't I Read that and I truly think about people like like you and me There are so many things that we should know But we don't know a lot of that's because Scripture for us is not sufficient There must be something more But Scripture truly is all that there is When it comes to Christianity when it comes to faith Because if Christ is sufficient then his words are sufficient If you're with us on Wednesday night, we talked about the Shunammite woman who believed the Word of the Lord Elisha came to her and Gave her the revelation That a famine was going to come That God had called for a famine It would last for seven years Only two people knew about the famine Elisha and the Shunammite woman That's it Says you got to go you got to leave She didn't question the Word of the Lord she obeyed the Word of the Lord and When she left she escaped The peril of the famine because she embraced the precepts of the Lord When you embrace the precepts of the Lord you escape the peril of the famine and she did And she enjoyed the prosperity in the land of the Philistines because she obeyed the Word of the Lord And at the end of those seven years when it was all done she came back her land was gone and she encountered a problem But she knew exactly what to do She went to appeal to the king And when she went to the appeal to the king Gehazi the servant of Elisha was speaking to the king about The Shunammite woman and her son who had been raised from the dead Seven years later she walked into the king's presence and lo and behold There is a man giving a testimony about her and her son She experienced the providence of God And she is the one who exhibits the promise of Psalm 19 verse number 11 in Keeping the Word of God.
There is great reward God never forgot about the widow in her affliction God always has a special place in his heart for the widows because they're in need and God took care of her She was able to escape the peril of the famine She was able to enjoy the prosperity in the land of the Philistines and she was able to come back and even though she Encountered a problem. She experienced a providence of God and saw the working of God in her life And she got back not just her land, but was paid back Double all that she had lost Because God takes care of those Who follow his word in keeping the commands of God there is great reward That's what we're looking at Psalm 19 verse number 11 by them your servant is warned and in keeping them There is great reward and that woman on Wednesday night The Shunammite woman is an example of what it means to receive a great reward from God by simple obedience to his word She never asked for anything more She just obeyed the word of the Lord So what is that great reward?
We began last week by telling you number one. It's eternity Christ said in John chapter 5 he who Believes my here's my words and believes in him who sent me has eternal life Eternity in heaven with Christ is given to those who hear the word of God and obey the word of God That is the great reward Eternity, that's why Christ said in Luke chapter 10 Listen, don't rejoice that the fact that that the demons are subject to your to you But rejoicing this that your names are recorded in eternity. That's where the real joy is So it begins with eternity and then we told you number two it deals with Liberty John chapter 8 Christ says if you abide in me and my words abide in you Okay, you are truly my disciples and you shall know the truth the truth of my word and that truth will set you free You'll have Liberty you'll be set free from the bondage of sin and Satan and that's why there's that great Liberation when we come to Christ no longer according to Romans 6 are we slaves to sin?
We're set free from that bondage. So not only is eternity a great reward But Liberty is a great reward and with that comes identity because now I am a child of the Living God I am a possession of God and I am zealous now to do good works for God. I am now Looked at as a child of the Living God. I have a whole brand new identity because I'm a new creation I'm a new creature. I have a new spirit. I got a new heart So not only is there eternity not only is there? Liberty but there's Identity on top of that there's tranquility because have you been justified by faith?
I'm at peace with God and because I'm at peace with God I can be at peace with my fellow man Psalm 119 165 says great. Peace have those who love thy law and nothing causes them to stumble as we talked about last week that's part of the great reward But that's not even just the tip of the iceberg It goes way beyond that And so I'm spending time with you to understand this because I want you to know that scripture not only is sufficient Not only a scripture supreme But scripture in obedience upon hearing the Word of God Grants you the greatest reward you can ever receive outside of eternity Liberty identity and tranquility number four There is purity Purity Christ said in John 15 verse number three those very simple words you have been made clean through the word That I have spoken unto you Purity Psalm 119 verse number nine.
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to the Word of God verse 11 your word I have treasured in my heart that I might not sin against thee Jeremiah 23 29 is not my word like a fire God's Word is like a fire it purifies Purity Cleanliness is all a part of the great reward that Christ gives to those who hear his word and Obey his word in keeping them psalm 1911. There is a Great reward but by them Your servant is warned remember Proverbs chapter chapter 5 Proverbs chapter 5 It says this Why should you my son be exhilarated with an adulteress and embrace the bosom of a foreigner?
For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord and he watches all his paths His own iniquities will capture the wicked and he will be held with the cords of a sin He will die for lack of instruction and in the greatness of his folly. He will go astray So Solomon warns that look what happens through a lack of instruction is that you'll embrace The foreigner you'll embrace the adulterous woman you can't afford To turn away from instruction and then over in Proverbs chapter 6 He talks about the importance of the Word of God and not forsaking the commandment of your father or the teaching of your mother Because it will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go.
It will be a lamp unto your path It will show you the way He says in verse number 27 Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned or can a man walk on hot coals and his feet not? Be scorched so is the one who goes into his neighbor's wife Whoever touches her will not go unpunished men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry But when he is found he must repay sevenfold. He must give all the substance of his house The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense He who would destroy himself doesn't Wounds and disgrace he will find and his reproach will not be blotted out For jealousy enrages a man and he will not spare the day of the vengeance He will not accept any ransom nor will he be satisfied through Though you give many gifts to him In other words the instruction comes why?
To give you a path that will take you away from the adulterous woman See purity is so important But it all is in line with the truth of God's Word Is it not true? Then the book of Acts chapter 5 with the death of Ananias and Sapphira in church That the number one concern of Christ was the purity of the church Isn't it interesting that the majority of churches in Evangelicalism today missed the point of Acts chapter 5 The whole point of Acts chapter 5 listen carefully is to keep the unbeliever out of church Not in church Acts chapter 5 With the death of Ananias and Sapphira in church Was designed by God to keep the unbeliever out of church Why?
The explosion of the church the early church was so huge with 3,000 being added 5,000 being added the church was exploding and with all the excitement all the Unbelievers were beginning to come into the church. So Christ is going to purify the church and So he uses Ananias and Sapphira two people who are part of the Jerusalem Church who lied about the offering that they gave and Both of them were killed on the same day in the same church at Two different times and the Bible says this in the book of Acts the fifth chapter the 11th verse and great fear came over the whole church and over all who heard of these things Why was there fear?
Because if you go to that church and you lie You might die Well, the unbelievers gonna stay away from that They're gonna stay away. They don't want to be part of that But we have all these churches today that want to have church for the unchurched They want to have church for the unbeliever So they adapt their whole service To meet the need of the unbeliever That's not worship that's compromise and therefore when the unbeliever comes he feels Comfortable Listen in the true church No one believer ever feels comfortable Ever Because when the message is preached and the Gospels given they either repent Or they leave that doesn't mean that unbelievers don't come to the church because they do First Corinthians 14 verse number 25 the unbeliever came to the church.
He hears men prophesy His sin is exposed He falls down and he repents and is saved and is born again because of the message of the Word of God Unbelievers. Yes come to your church But they don't stay because they don't feel comfortable in the assembly of the righteous Because they love their unrighteousness See that's so important to understand God is concerned about the purity of his people So he gives us his word that purifies the heart of every man That's why we tell you that first or second I'm sorry first that's when it's to verse number 13 says for this reason We also constantly thank God that when you receive the Word of God Which you heard from us you accepted it not as the Word of men before what it really is the Word of God Which also performs its work in you who believe?
God's Word works in the heart of the believer It always works in the heart of the believer But it never works in the heart of the unbeliever Unless that believer unbeliever has been called and chosen by God to come to salvation and Then upon hearing the Word of God They repent of their sins and they come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord That's so important But you see the Word of God is that work in our hearts So we preach to you the Word of God we teach to you the Word of God you memorize the Word of God Why because it's all part of the purity of your life letting the Word of Christ dwell in you richly So that you can live a clean and holy life a pure and holy life before the world That needs to know that Jesus Christ cleanses us from all of our sin purity is a great reward Why?
because purity leads to point number six and that is beauty Beauty is a great reward listen to Proverbs chapter 4 Proverbs chapter 4 Here O son the instruction of a father and give attention that you may gain understanding For I give you sound teaching do not abandon instruction When I was a son to my father tender and the only son on the side of my mother He taught me and said to me let your heart hold fast my words keep my commandments and live Acquire wisdom acquire understanding do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth do not forsake her and she will guard you Love her and she will watch over you the beginning of wisdom is acquire wisdom and with all your acquiring get Understanding price her she will exalt you she will honor you if you embrace her She will place on your head a garland of grace.
She will present you with the crown of Beauty Crown of beauty hearing instruction gaining wisdom Gaining understanding only helps you become more and more beautiful That's what the Word of the Lord does That's why in John chapter 14 Christ said these words first 21 He who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me and he who loves me will be loved by my father And I will love him and I will disclose myself to him What an amazing statement if you keep my commandments you show that you love me and If you love me, it's because I have loved you But what I'm going to do is I am going to disclose myself I'm going to manifest myself To you.
In other words, you're gonna be able to see and understand who I am through the commandments of God So Paul says these words in the book of 2nd Corinthians chapter 3 verse number 18 But we all with unveiled face Beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory Just as from the Spirit of the Lord So we open the Word of God. It's like a mirror And we behold in this mirror the glory of the Lord It's the perfect law of Liberty and as we behold the glory, which is the beauty of the Lord We are being transformed From one level of beauty to the next level of beauty even as by the Spirit of God So beauty is a great reward for those who hear the Word of God and keep the Word of God By them your servant is warned in keeping them there is a great reward.
What's the reward? You become just like the beauty of the Christ You become more and more like Christ So not only is there eternity Not only is there Liberty not only is their identity and tranquility, but there's purity and there's beauty That's why the Bible talks about the walk of the believer over in Ephesians chapter 4 In Ephesians chapter 4 Paul talks about how God has given gifted men to the church That they may equip the church the saints for the work of ministry And in the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry We are all growing together in our stature in Christ He goes on to say in verse number 17 So this I say and affirm together with the Lord that you walk no longer Just as the Gentiles also walk in the futility of their mind being darkened in their understanding excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them because of the hardness of their Heart and they having become callous have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness But you did not learn Christ in this way you don't learn about Christ this way Since indeed you have heard him and have been taught in him just as truth is in Jesus that in reference to your former manner of life that you lay aside the old self which is being corrupted in accordance with the lust of deceit and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and Put on the new self which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth You do not learn Christ's way You were instructed in a different way Why you heard the Word of God and now you walk differently?
Everything about you is a distinct unique Separate kind of walk you don't walk like the Gentiles who walk in the emptiness The vainness the futility of their own minds they've given themselves over to sensuality greediness every kind of impurity But she didn't learn Christ that way You walk in a different way You walk as he would go on to say in chapter 5 you walk in love Just as Christ loved the church in verse 8 of chapter 5 you walk as children of the light He says in in verse 15 you no longer walk as unwise men But as wise men You walk wisely You walk brightly You walk lovingly You walk separately That's the beautiful walk It's completely different than the life of the unbeliever That's the great reward You're not like the world you're different than the world and that is just part of the great reward Let me move on for you.
I have many more that I want to give you the next one which would be number seven Would be joy Joy Joy is a great reward of hearing the Word of God and keeping the Word of God It says in Psalm 19 verse number 8 the priests said to the Lord are right Rejoicing the heart Rejoicing the heart the Bible says in First John chapter 1 verse number 4 these things we write so that your joy may be made complete full John says why do you write these things?
So your joy will be made complete Psalmist would say in Psalm 119 these words in 111 I Have inherited your testimonies forever for they are the joy of My heart I Have inclined my heart to perform your statutes forever to the very end Psalm 119 verse 143 trouble and anguish have come upon me yet. Your commandments are my delight They are my joy, even though there is trouble and even though there is anguish that has come upon me I have joy because your commandments are my delight He says in verse 162.
I Rejoice at your word as one who finds great spoil He says in verse 174. I long for your salvation O Lord and your law is my delight One of the great rewards of hearing the Word of God and Keeping the Word of God is the joy of the Lord If you don't have joy today You got to go back and ask yourself Where you have disobeyed the commandment of the Lord? You got to ask yourself where you've compromised the Word of God Because if you're keeping God's Word because you've heard it and even though trouble and anguish surround you You delight in the commandments of God Because they are sufficient for you They are supreme to you They're everything to you Third John 4.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth John speaking From the standpoint of a spiritual parent to know that his greatest joy is to know his children walk in truth I'm a father of eight The greatest joy that I have is to know that my children know God and follow God That's the greatest joy Nothing compares to that joy well, it's all centered around the Word of the Lord and We need to take heart and take note of what God has said in his word about joy That's why in Luke 2 verse number 11, what did the angel say to the shepherds?
We bring you good news of What? What kind of joy? Great joy, you should have said great joy But instead you said great joy Big difference, right? I don't think the angel said hey, guess what? We bring you good news of great joy. I said we bring you good news of Great joy good news that brings great joy. The gospel always brings joy because of eternity because of Liberty because of identity because the tranquility Because of purity because of beauty it brings great joy. The joy is there you see joy Paul says rejoice in the Lord always and again.
I say rejoice. It's a command that's given It's a command that's to be obeyed It's not an optional Suggestion given to you that you can rejoice when you choose to It's a command to be given that you rejoice at all times Let me give you three more in Succession, okay, it will conclude with these three and I got a lot more so at the Resurrection Sunday We're gonna go back and talk to you about the great reward Because I could talk about the great reward for the rest of the year Because the Bible is so explicit Because it wants you to know that scripture is absolutely Sufficient for every need that you have Turn me to Psalm 1 Psalm 1 You know the psalm Should know it But let me give you three more great rewards How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked nor stand in the path of sinners Nor sit in the seat of scoff scoffers So be careful Be careful Where you step?
Be careful where you stand Be careful where you sit Okay Be very careful But his delight is in the law of the Lord and in his law. He meditates day and night In his law he meditates day and night This is the blessed man the one who meditates in the law day and night now I know you're gonna ask the question how can I as the CEO of a major company? Meditate in the law of God day and night How can I as a teacher in my school? Who has a full class eight periods a day or seven periods a day or six? How many are how many you have how can I meditate in the law of God day and night?
I'm gonna answer that question for you in a second. Okay, this is blessed as many who meditates day and night He will be like a tree firmly planted by the streams of water which yields its fruit in its season And it's leaf does not wither and in whatever he does he Prospers, let me give you great reward eight nine and ten Okay, eight is productivity nine is perpetuity and ten is Prosperity This is all part of the great reward those who delight in the commandments of God.
The first one is Productivity this man will be like a tree firmly planted by the streams of water which yields its fruit in its season What is the fruit?
It's the fruit of the Spirit Galatians chapter 5 right the fruit of the Spirit is love joy Peace long-suffering, right? It's all about the fruit of the Spirit John 15 verse number 8 Says what in this is my Father glorified that you bear much Fruit, how do you do that? by meditating the law of God day and Night Productivity so important to the stand what did Christ say in Matthew 7 by their fruits you Will know them speaking of false teachers You'll always know them by the attitude and actions that they portray on a regular basis the man of God The blessed man who delights day and night in the precepts of God has a great reward He brings and bears forth fruit in its season There's productivity but number two There's perpetuity Steadfastness there is this realm of consistency says and its leaf does not wither He's continual He doesn't give up He's steadfast He's determined His leaf never withers Perpetuity a continual state of existence.
He never goes by the wayside Why? Because he meditates day and night on the law of God Doesn't give up doesn't quit Because the law of God is the joy of his heart and then in whatever he does He prospers Prosperity Prosperity comes to those who truly hear and obey the Word of God and That prosperity is defined by God himself Remember we read you I think was last time Deuteronomy chapter 30 verse number 15 Moses says see I've set before you today life and Prosperity death and Adversity By hearing the Word of God and obeying the Word of God There's life with life comes prosperity to disobey is death and adversity and so the psalmist says in Psalm 1 as he begins this 150 chapters of Psalms Most of them centered around the Word of God The blessed man who meditates day and night Will be the prosperous man What did God say?
to Joshua in Joshua chapter 1 He said Verse 7 be strong and very courageous Be careful to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you Do not turn from it to the right or to the left so you may have success wherever you go This book of the law should not depart from your mouth But you shall meditate on a day and night Say you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it for then you will make your way Prosperous and then you will have success have I not commanded you be strong and courageous Do not tremble or be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go God said to Joshua the same thing the psalmist records in Psalm 1 Productivity Perpetuity and prosperity is yours if you meditate on the law of God day and night so for those of you who are presidents of a or CEOs of a major company or teachers in a School or you have a job that's very demanding None of you has a job more demanding than Joshua who had to lead over a million Jews Into the promised land because none of you have a million people reporting to you None of you do None of you oversee a million disgruntled murmuring Jews You might have 50 in your company or a hundred or a thousand or maybe two thousand But none of you oversee a million people and God tells Joshua We'll be successful You will be prosperous You want to be steadfast and courageous?
You want to be able to keep on keeping on? Meditate on my law day and night Observe to do all that I've commanded you in other words Paul said this way let the Word of Christ be at home in your hearts Colossians 316 Never let God's Word become a stranger to you Always let it be at home in your heart Because that allows you to meditate upon it throughout the day So no matter what the circumstances no matter what the situation no matter what the conflict no matter where? The difficulty no matter what the relationship Your meditation upon the Word of God will allow you Allow you to be the man of God the woman of God that he wants you to be This is the great reward God gives us eternity By hearing and keeping his word He gives us liberty.
We're set free from the bondage of sin and it's slavery He gives us a whole brand new identity We're new creations of Christ and because of that there's this supreme tranquility this peace that overwhelms our lives Because we're at peace with God That Allows us to live a pure and holy life before him because we are in the Word of God that cleanses us Purity is that great reward which leads to beauty because now we portray Christ in his beauty to the world And with that beauty comes comes Productivity Prosperity and perpetuity That's just the icing or just the tip of the iceberg When it comes to understanding the great reward There is a whole slew of other elements that enable us to see how great it is to believe That God's Word is absolutely sufficient and that the servant of God is warned by them and Keeping them there is Great reward.
Let me pray with you father. We thank you for this day What a joy it is to be in the Word of God The joy of the Lord is our Strength Wow Our prayer is that every one of us today would truly believe that God's Word is sufficient and that we Would submit to its authority There is no substitution for submission When we submit to the authority of God's Word great things happen simply because You will make sure they do We thank you for your word May we men and women of the book the Bible the holy scriptures We pray in Jesus name Amen You
