And as you come on Wednesday evenings, we look forward to what God's going to teach us as we explore his word together. In chapter 11, we saw David in his sin with Bathsheba. And we are able to explain to you the downward spiral of David's life. Hopefully you were with us, you understand that. If you weren't, I would encourage you to at least get the CD so that you're able to understand what has happened in David's life up to this point. It's been almost a year since his sin with Bathsheba. The baby has been born.
And God is going to do something rather unique in David's life. He is going to confront him on his sin by using the prophet Nathan. Now David during this whole time has struggled. We know that from Psalm 32. The Bible says these words in Psalm 32, verse number three, when I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long for day and night thy hand was heavy upon me.
My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. David explains to us before he was ever forgiven of his sins, what was taking place in his life as he would bear the the the burden and guilt of his sin. He was weighed down. It was difficult for him. David wrote no psalms during this 12 month period of his life. His harp had lost its tune. He sang no songs. David's vitality was drained. His joy according to Psalm 51 was gone. You know when you live in sin, joy does not permeate your life.
It can't because joy is produced by Christ who is the author of joy. And when you live in sin, then joy does not resound in your life. And David had no joy. And yet he enjoyed the passing pleasures of sin for a season. And David becomes the classic example of how much pleasure sin can be but how temporary that pleasure really is. It never lasts. Satan wants you to think that it's going to last forever. Satan wants you to think it's the best thing going. And yet the Bible is true. The passing pleasures of sin only last for a brief moment as compared to the repercussions of that sin.
And David had gone a whole year without ever confessing his sin and God let him go. God waited for David to come and beg forgiveness. God waited for David to come to him and to realize the severity of his sin and to come and repent of his sin but David did not. And that's because he was in that realm of deceitfulness, that last aspect of his of his downward spiral. He had deceived himself into thinking that this was the right thing, this was the best thing, it was okay. Uriah was dead, Bathsheba was free to marry.
So he took her as his wife and the child was born. And to that whole time there were no consequences for his sin. Oh there were some internal turmoil but he could kind of push that down for a while because there was nothing that had been exposed. Until this chapter when Nathan comes to him and and confronts him. And you realize that what happens is that David comes to grips with the reality of his sin. And maybe here tonight and you're living in sin, I don't know, maybe you've got this sin thing going on and you think that nobody knows about it, it's secret and you can hide it forever.
You can't. You can't. And David provides the testimony of the inability we have to hide our sin because God knows it. God sees everything. Let me read to you just the the first 14 verses.
We're only gonna cover the first 12 this evening because there's so much here. But verse number one says this, then the Lord sent Nathan to David and he came to him and said there were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor.
The rich man had a great many flocks and herds but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb which he bought and nourished and grew up together with him and his children. He would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom. It was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man and he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him. Rather he took the poor man's ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.
Then David's anger burned greatly against the man. He said to Nathan, as the Lord lives surely the man who has done this deserves to die and he must make restitution for the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and had no compassion. Nathan then said to David, you are the man. Thus says the Lord God of Israel, it is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. I also gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your care and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah and if that had been too little I would have added to you many more things like these.
Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with a sword, have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. Thus says the Lord, behold I will raise up evil against you from your own household. I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion.
You shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. Indeed you did it secretly but I will do this thing before all Israel and under the sun. Then David said to Nathan I have sinned against the Lord. Nathan said to David the Lord also has taken away your sin. You shall not die. However because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme the child also that is born to you shall surely die. So Nathan went to his house. You read this story it's a familiar story to most of us we understand 2nd Samuel 11, 2nd Samuel chapter 12 but all the things that Nathan said and how God used Nathan is very powerful.
The Lord said these words in the book of Proverbs the 6th chapter 27th verse can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned or can a man walk on hot coals that his feet not be scorched so is the one who goes into his neighbor's wife whoever touches her will not go unpunished. Verse 32 the one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense he who would destroy himself does it wounds and disgrace he will find his reproach will not be blotted out. Those words are just so incredibly true and yet we we just kind of glaze over them as if there are no consequences for sin there are and David provides for us an example in this area so we want to begin by looking at the condemnation of David Nathan comes to him and God uses Nathan to condemn his actions remember now David I mean yeah David had 12 months to turn from a sin God had graciously granted him the opportunity to repent and maybe just maybe if David would have willingly gone to the Lord said Lord I have sinned against you please forgive me maybe the child would have lived maybe the things in his home would not have been as bad as they turned out to be I don't know that but God waited and he waited and he waited and David never came so God pursued David and you know what the good thing is about that is that God is always in pursuit of man remember Adam when he sinned God came looking for Adam in the cool of the day Adam where are you because Adam wasn't about to go to God so God went to Adam how about Moses the backside of Midian God came to Moses and Bernie Bush how about Elijah he had done such a great job there on Mount Carmel and and having the Lord demonstrate his power and slaying the 450 prophets of Baal there in the in the book Kidron and yet and yet Jezebel pursued him he fled and God came after Elijah how about Jonah Jonah he received direct orders from God and he said I'm I'm not going there I'm going the other way and well we know the story about Jonah and swallowed by the fish God came to Jonah and God came to Jonah under the juniper tree in Jonah chapter 4 you know God is so good he's the one who pursues us because we don't by nature come to him you think that would be the case if you have a physical problem what do you do you go to the doctor if it's bad enough you're gonna go to the emergency room because you got to rid yourself of the pain the discomfort right you got to deal with the issue at hand it's a physical issue I've got it whether it's a disease whether it's a broken limb no matter what it is you got to deal with it because you're in pain but a spiritual issue we don't do that do it we got to let the spiritual issues fly by as if they don't matter that much but they affect our soul and the effects of sin are far greater than the effects of cancer lung disease any kind of sickness you might come across physically the condition of your soul is much more important to that but when we sin spiritually we just kind of are not too quick to remedy the situation David wasn't David's health was fine he was in his fifties he was doing well he had everything he could ever possibly want God had given it to him and so he was doing fine health-wise but spiritually he wasn't and so it wasn't too quick to to get help think about that in your life when you sin how quick are you to confess how quick are you to repent how quick are you to make things right with those in your family or your friends sometimes we just kind of let it slide by the Bible says that Christ came to seek and save that which was lost it's a good thing he did because if he didn't we wouldn't get saved he comes after us and so God pursues Nathan at just the right time it says in verse number one then the Lord sent Nathan to David why Nathan when Nathan was a prophet of God but Nathan's name means gift of God which really is good for us to understand because when someone confronts you on your sin it really is a gift from God is that not true I mean God can let you stay in your sin have no joy the hand of the Lord being heavy upon you but God gives you a gift in someone who comes to you and says you're the man you sinned now unfortunately we don't look at that as a gift do we we can't look at it as as the gift we don't want to receive but it truly is a gift and Nathan was that man that God used to bring David back to himself and so Nathan was called by God to go to David he was a prophet now prophets were guys who came and yes they would prophesy the future they would talk about what would happen in the future but prophets were designed particularly to confront people on sin I mean if you read about Elijah you read about Ezekiel you read about Elisha you read about Malachi you read about Jeremiah you read about Isaiah it's all about confronting people on their sin yes they would tell people about the future because as a result of the consequences of the sin this is what was going to happen so you got to repent that's what they did they were prophets of God and that that is so important because only revival only comes because people had been confronted on their sin and they have to get right with God psychiatrists and psychologists and social workers and government bureaucrats can't do that but prophets can people who proclaim the truth can and unfortunately in the church today we have very few prophets not those who foretell the future but speak the truth and deal with sin and Nathan was that man that God chose God always has his prophets God always has his spokespeople who will come in and deal with sin issues so that people will realize that their sins have separated them from God remember Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter 5 Peter confronted them Peter was a prophet he was an apostle but they they needed to be confronted because they have lied about how much they had sold their property for the amazing thing about that is that they still gave the proceeds to the church they still gave to the church but they lied about how much they sold the property for and when Peter confronted them they both dropped dead at different times in the church and it's a miracle because what God did was grow the church through their death through the confrontation of sin God grew the church great fear came upon the church and great fear came upon all those who heard about what took place in the church if you came to church and you lied to the pastor and you dropped dead in the church great fear would come upon West Covina all of California don't go to that church you'll die and yet God was purifying the church wasn't he he was purifying the church because at the very outset of the church people had to know that God was serious about sin church had to know that so Peter would be the one who would confront them like Elijah like Nathan Jeremiah Malachi great preachers of the truth who would come and say you're the man you got to turn it around and repent of your sin Nathan was the one called by God to do just that why Nathan well because Nathan exemplified a great character had to had to because he was one who had to speak for God you know you ever notice that preachers don't preach too much on sin because that would mean they couldn't sin think about it it's not that preachers don't sin because we do but you got to come out against sin you got to deal with sinful issues and yet people who are soft on sin by nature are steeped in sin just think about it in Matthew 18 you're to confront someone who has sinned that's for the purity of the church but we don't do that because we don't want somebody confronting us on our sin we don't want someone to call us into account on our sin and yet there's this purifying agent that God has set up in the church that if you go to your brother and confront them on their sin and they repent you've won your brother but to do that your character has got to be exemplary it's got to be one that honors the Lord right you can't go to your brother and confront him on his immoral relationship if you yourself are living in an immoral relationship right you can't go to your brother and confront him on gossip if you yourself are involved in gossip you can't go and confront your brother on their sinful behavior if you are engaged in similar sinful behavior can't do that and so there's this self-purifying aspect that God is set up in the church that helps the church and Nathan was a guy who whose character had to have been exemplary he was listen he was faithful and he was fearless he was faithful to do what God said remember back in 2nd Samuel chapter 7 Nathan was the one that David went to and said I want to build a house for God and they said go for it David and that night God came and Nathan said you know what that's not gonna work you got to go back and tell him he can't do that and Nathan could have said well I've already told him he can't now I gotta go back and say he can't Nathan got up the next day did exactly what God said because he was true to the Word of God and that paved the way for 2nd Samuel chapter 12 he was faithful to proclaim everything that God said that's why Paul said in Acts chapter 20 I cease not to declare to you the whole counsel of God because I wanted you to know the truth about God and who he is and what he's done and that's why over in the book of Ezekiel these words are recorded Ezekiel 33 verse number 7 God says now it's for you son of man I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel so you will hear a message from my mouth and give them warning from me when I say to the wicked a wicked man you shall surely die and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way that wicked man shall die in his iniquity but his blood I require from your hand but if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way he will die in his iniquity and you have delivered your life Wow God says Ezekiel if there's a wicked man you go to him and tell him he's in a sin he's got a turn from a sin if he doesn't and he dies it's on him but if you don't tell him what I tell you to tell him if he dies it's on you Ezekiel because you're the watchman you're the prophet you're the preacher and you must be faithful to tell people the truth give them the Word of God give them the words from my mouth if you just give them my words you're okay don't extrapolate on what I say just give them my words that's all you got to do and you'll be free you'll be delivered if that man dies so Nathan was one who was faithful but Nathan was also fearless I mean he had to be courageous because he's going to the King he's gonna confront the King on a sin John the Baptist did that with King Herod right something similar he said he was an immoral man and Herod put him in prison and John lost his life lost his head lost his life too if you lose your head I get you you lose your life so those two got kind of go hand in hand okay or head and shoulders however you want to say it oh that's bad that's real bad but anyway he was fearless he would go and he would give this parable he would give this parable to David knowing knowing that it was David David didn't know David just thought it was a real story David just thought it was some guy who had taken somebody else's lamb and he was a rich guy that he took the poor guy's lamb and and boy I tell you David got upset but he was fearless if you want to confront somebody on their sin Nathan provides for us the way to do it he must be faithful to everything God says and he must be fearless when you stand before that individual he was standing before the King of Israel the King of Israel had already had Uriah killed and thought he had covered that one up pretty well only Joab knew about that he thought he'd done okay he could have had Nathan killed but Nathan went to him and confronted him on a sin because he wanted him to know the truth and God had called Nathan to be that prophet to be that spokesperson for him so the Bible tells us that he gives a parable two men one rich one poor it's not hard to figure out David was a rich guy Uriah was a poor guy Uriah had one little lamb one little wife the rich man had many lambs or many wives pretty easy to figure that one out but I want you to notice in the parable what it says verse four now a traveler came to the rich man who's the traveler that's temptation that's temptation it was crouching at the door temptation came to David now remember David was unprepared to face that temptation why we told you because of his carelessness he was careless in his obedience he was definitely careless in his vigilance he was careless in his allegiance his dependence his severance the Bible says to flee immorality the Bible says to flee youthful lust David because he was careless was unable to do that and that's why we tell you in that downward spiral of David's sin it all begins with that carelessness in my obedience to God that's where it began with David and so when the traveler came when temptation came he not only let temptation enter he entertained temptation he entertained the traveler because he was unprepared to flee remember way back in Genesis chapter 4 in Genesis chapter 4 God is speaking to Cain Cain had offered the wrong sacrifice he was angry at God but God confronts him and said you offered the wrong thing you didn't do it right didn't worship me right and it says verse 6 and the Lord said to Cain why are you angry why is your countenance fallen if you do well will not your countenance be lifted up and if you do not do well sin is crouching at the door and its desire is for you but you must master it that's a that's a powerful verse why because that is the verse you use to interpret Genesis chapter 3 verse number 16 about the effects of the fall upon the woman where it says yet her desire shall be for her husband that mean that after the fall the woman's gonna desire her husband in a sexual way no the same word is used of Cain the woman's desire will be to control her husband that's the result of the fall she seeks to dominate her husband as sin was crouching at the door for Cain seeking to master him to dominate him and he must master it he must control it see because if he doesn't control it it will control him what happened with David is that the traveler came to his door he let the traveler in the traveler temptation entered into his into his heart and then he entertained temptation we went through that whole thing with you about his his lustfulness his covetousness his foolishness his fearlessness he feared not God he was foolish he entertained sin he went and inquired about Bathsheba and so here Nathan comes in and Nathan doesn't know the story Nathan just knows the word of the Lord see he doesn't know how it all transpired with David and Bathsheba he only knows what God said to say to him and that's what he does and he says so so you got this rich guy you got this poor guy and and the rich guy has everything the poor guy's got just one little lamb and when the traveler comes three times it says the traveler came into him the traveler came into him the traveler came into him see David was unprepared to flee youthful lusts he was unprepared to be vigilant he was unprepared to to cut it out he was unprepared to turn and run because he was careless that's why we take you back to the very beginning listen if you're careless in your obedience to God and his Word it just leads to further carelessness which puts you on that downward spiral to sin and all of its effects so I'm the David traveler came and he entered in and David entertained the traveler and he took the one little lamb for the poor guy and prepared it for the way for David was incensed he was angry he was he was vehemently opposed to what to take place and David knew nothing about what Nathan was saying and so David's response twofold one it was it was it was harsh it was too harsh because nowhere in Israel's laws does thievery result in death okay true according to the book of Exodus you have to pay back fourfold and that's what David says but David also says this guy shall die that was just too harsh because there was no law in Israel for that to take place and the ironic thing about that is that it was so hypocritical because you see in David's sin the consequences for adultery were stoning death David should have died Bathsheba should have died they should have been stoned to death because that was the penalty for adultery and so David goes kind of all haywire here because he hears this story he thinks it's a true story he says he's a dead man he deserves to die before he dies he's gotta pay it back fourfold though that's what the law says but he's gonna die Nathan says you're the man two words in Hebrew just two words you're in just that quick David realized what he had said what he had done you're the man you are the man David and then Nathan does something that is just so incredibly marvelous he says this 2nd Samuel chapter 12 verse number 7 thus says the Lord God of Israel it is I who anointed you king over Israel this I delivered you from the hand of Saul I also gave you your master's house and your master's wives you care and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah and if that had been too little I would have added to you many more things like these David I gave you everything I gave you the position as king I gave you the protection from Saul who do you think protected you for all those years it was me who do you think made you king over Israel it was me who do you think gave you everything that Saul had it was me who do you think gave you the power in Israel and Judah I gave you position I gave you possessions I gave you power I gave you prestige I gave you everything it was I and if that wasn't enough I'd have given you a whole lot more but that was enough supposedly but you didn't think it was enough he rehearsed God's provision for him see that's what God does God says look what I did for you look what I've done because we forget we kind of go through life and we just forget all the blessings that God has done that's why the psalmist says I love it so well Psalm 103 bless the Lord all my soul and all that is within me bless this holy name bless the Lord all my soul forget none of his benefits who pardons all your iniquities heals all your soul's diseases redeems your life from the pit crowns you with loving kindness and compassion satisfies your years with good things that your youth is renewed like the Eagles this is what I've done for you these are the benefits that you received you've received absolution you received coronation you received redemption you received satisfaction I have given you all of that as if that wasn't enough and yet you still want to sin against me you still want to despise my name blaspheme my name and sin against me after all I've done for you it makes you think twice before you sin doesn't it makes you want to go home and say Lord I'm sorry I did anything wrong today forgive me because he's done so much for us and that's what God does with with David he uses Nathan to go back and say everything you have God gave you everything he gave it to you David and this is how you repay him this is how you treat the living God of the universe and then he says in verse 9 why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in his sight well that phrase right there is the essence of David's fallenness remember he was careless in his obedience to the Word of God and Nathan takes him back to the beginning of that carelessness takes him back and says you have despised the Word of the Lord you have treated God's Word lightly you have treated it as if it means nothing David you despise the Word of the Lord remember Proverbs chapter 13 verse number 13 the one who despises the Word will be in debt to the Word in other words he who despises the Word the Word will be destroyed by that Word but the one who fears the commandment will be rewarded you can't despise the Word of the Lord and that's exactly what David did that's why the Bible says in the first testimony in chapter 5 despise not prophetic utterances when someone speaks the truth to you don't sit back and say you know what I don't I don't believe that you know what that you know that doesn't apply to me you know what I'm not sure that's the case you know what I'm not gonna do that don't despise prophetic utterances Paul says don't do that why because you'll be in debt to that Word you'll be judged by that Word that's what Israel's problem was back in the book of Isaiah chapter 5 God says let me sing now for my well-beloved song of my beloved concerning his vineyard my well-beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill he dug it all around removed its stones and planted it with the choicest vine and he built a tower in the middle of it and hewed out a wine vat in it then he expected it to produce good grapes but it only produced worthless ones God says I took Israel I did everything for Israel I needed to make it succeed making sure that it could produce everything that's perfect and what it produced was that which was worthless verse 4 what more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done what else can I do I've done everything for for Israel I've done everything I possibly can to make them successful to make them produce that which is righteous but they produce that which was unrighteous so now let me tell you what I'm going to do to my vineyard God says I will remove its hedge it will be consumed I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground and I will lay it waste it will not be pruned or hoed but briars and thorns will come up I will also charge the clouds to rain no rain on it for the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel and the men of Judah his delightful plant thus he looked for justice but behold bloodshed he looked for righteousness but behold the cry of distress God says I did everything for Israel I made them so they could be successful in my kingdom they were why were they he tells us verse 24 for they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel on this account the anger of the Lord has burned against his people and he has stretched out his hand against them and struck them down Wow do you know why they produced worthless grapes is because they despised the word of the Holy One of Israel they treated lightly what God said to be true he doesn't mean that he's not gonna do that God doesn't kill people anymore because of their sin come on God doesn't send people to hell he's a loving God so they treat what God says as if it means nothing at all and Israel went off into captivity at Babylonian captivity because they despised the word of the Lord but there's a phrase here you need to see in Isaiah chapter 5 it says and the mountains quaked and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets for all this is anger is not spent but his hand is still stretched out that is so good he still stretches out his hand just come repent turn I will accept you and that's exactly what happened to David he had sinned against the Lord God he despised the word of the Lord and yet God's hand was still stretched out to David that's why he sent Nathan to him sent Nathan the gift of God to confront him on a sin to show him that there was forgiveness possible there was restoration to fellowship with the living God that communion with God still could exist in David's life God's hand is still stretched out and to you my friend if you're in sin tonight God's hand is still stretched out oh you might be facing the severity of your sin today but God says I still want you for my own his hand is stretched out in love and compassion and concern and mercy and grace that's exactly what happened with David the parable King he says you despise the word of the Lord Wow you treated my word as if it meant nothing to you David and remember he was the king he was to write the law of God he was to write the books of the Torah he was supposed to lead the people based on what the word said but he looked at those verses about multiple wives and said I don't do that not that big a deal other Kings do it shows my power or show my power so I'll take more wives and all that did was fuel his temptation fuel his carnal desires so that when temptation came it entered he entertained it and it would destroy him so Nathan says to him you despise word of the Lord I do an evil in sight and you have struck down your eye the Hittite with the sword did David do that oh yes he did oh he didn't actually hold the sword in his hand but he orchestrated the whole thing which shows you what God thinks about sin it's not necessarily the act of the sin it's the attitude of the heart in sin right God says you have heard that it was said you shall not murder but I say to you if you hate your brother you have already murdered him in your heart you are a murderer that's exactly what God says you had the sword in your hand David and you killed Uriah the Hittite because in your heart that's what you wanted to have happen and God charged him with that you've taken his wife to be your wife and killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon you join with the enemy David in your killing of Uriah you joined hands with the enemy because you are fighting against them but you use the enemy to fulfill your purposes you joined with the enemy David and he was accused of that and then what Nathan does is give him the consequences of his sin he says now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house what's the consequences of sin it's always death right the wage of sin is death and when it says the sword shall never depart from your house it speaks of the death in his house Ammon dies first Absalom Adonijah and of course the child fourfold he pays back from the one lamb that he took they all die the sword will never depart David from your house on top of that he says these words because you have despised me and taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife thus says the Lord behold I will raise up evil against you from your own household not only will death be a result of your sin but there will be defiance in your own house you see when he sinned he sinned against the house of Uriah and the house of David sinned against the house of Uriah and there's something about adultery and immorality that affects your house like no other sin affects it no other sin and what's gonna happen is that your own house will defy you think about it and that's exactly what took place with Absalom he defied his father's authority as we go on through the book of 2nd Samuel you'll see how Absalom rises up against his father that's the consequences of a sin David would live with the consequences of his sin for the rest of his life for one moment of pleasure he would suffer for the rest of his life there would be death in his house there would be defiance in his house and note this it says I will even take your wife before your eyes and give them to your companion he shall lie with your wives in broad daylight there will be defilement in your house and the funny thing about that is that it was Ahithophel the grandfather of Bathsheba who would turn against David and encourage Absalom to sleep with David's wives that's harsh isn't it he did it openly for all to see to mock his father there would be death in his home defiance in his home defilement in his home but even worse than all that there would be a disclosure of his sin for the world to see God says these words 2nd Samuel 12 indeed you did it secretly but I will do this thing before all Israel and under the Sun everybody's gonna know it David tried to hide it you tried to keep it secret but everybody's gonna know it Wow imagine that I read that that's that's hard stuff but God was true to his word it was true his word so what do you do I told you about the downward spiral spiral of David's life all that carelessness when it comes to obedience and vigilance and allegiance independence all that stuff we went through weeks ago and that carelessness led to his idleness that idleness led to his laziness that laziness led to his his lustfulness and then on so down the Lord till we got to his deceitfulness remember that when you come to deceitfulness and you confront your sin or two things happen brokenness or hardness one of the two you either broken over your sin and you repent or you become hardened and calloused against the one who confronted you and against your God David was a broken man look what it says then David said to Nathan I have sinned against the Lord Wow that's a broken man before David could ever be restored he had to be broken and he was a broken man he would live the rest of his time in brokenness as a result of a sin he would be forgiven and Nathan said to David the Lord also has taken away your sin you shall not die he should have died because he committed adultery but God has taken away your sin and then he says this however because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme child also that his board view shall surely die Nathan left and went to his house Nathan faithfully and fearlessly delivered the message of God David listened realized the severity of a sin and was a broken man and now God can begin to restore David but it's that classic example of yes there's forgiveness when you sin because God always forgives but forgiveness never negates the consequences of sin just never does and the consequences for David upon his home were severe his ability to lead in his home would be forever altered ever changed his integrity had been compromised tremendously his authority compromised his purity demoralized and everything about his ability to lead was lost he would still lead Israel he would still try to lead his family but you will see in David's life that his authority over Absalom just does not exist because Absalom has no respect for his father none and that was the consequences of his sin see passionate and this is such a heavy this is so hard such a downer no it's not it's not downer why well number one it's the truth the truth is not a downer it's an upper really is it's a warning for all of us not to sin it's a warning to all of us that that when you sin repent repent don't wait for someone to come and confront you repent of your sin now do it now because if you confess your sin you'll find mercy if you cover your sin you find no mercy and David yes was a broken man but that brokenness would lead to his restoration which would allow him to write the Psalms that we read today Psalm 32 Psalm 51 about true repentance from sin and we can look at our lives and ask have we repented of our sin so God will begin to rebuild David's life he'll lose the child that will happen but God will do something and override all of David's sin and Solomon will be born to Bathsheba the son that would build the temple that God had already told him one of your sons will build the temple you will not but God already knew the son was God already knew was Solomon God already knew about Bathsheba he knew all that because your sin never overrides the sovereignty and the power of Almighty God let me pray with you father thank you for tonight Lord a chance to be in your word and study it so much yet to be said so much Lord that causes us to wake up to look at our lives to make sure we live for the glory and honor of our God thank you for our time together this evening bless each and every person that's here tonight because of their commitment to come and hear your word and to grow in their walk with you cause this night to be a supreme blessing in their lives for your glory for your honor in Jesus name amen
